ENGAGEMENT of Crown Prince Haakon of Norway to Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby

Crown Prince Haakon met Miss Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby (b. 19th August 1973 in Kristiansand) briefly already four years ago through mutual friends, but it was not until the summer of 1999 that they really got to know each other. 

They became a couple in the autumn and the romance became publicly known at the end of that year. The Crown Prince himself confirmed the relationship in a TV interview in May 2000.

Crown Prince Philippe of Belgium & Mathilde d'Udekem d'Acoz

Brussels, December 4th 1999: Mathilde d'Udekem d'Acoz (born on January 20, 1973) and HRH Prince Philippe The Duke of Brabant (born April 15, 1960) met in 1996 during a game of tennis. Mathilde was studiying at L'Universite Catholique de Louvin at the time.


The engagement was announced on September 13th 1999

The wedding ceremony was held at Saint Michiels Cathedral in Brussels

Mathilde and Philippe have three children:

• Princess Elisabeth (October 25, 2001)
• Prince Gabriel (August 20, 2003)
• Prince Emmanuel (October 4, 2005)
