The engagement of Crown Prince Willem Alexander and his Argentinian girlfriend Maxima Zorreguieta was announced back in March 2001 after they had been dating for about two years. Maxima and Willem Alexander met in 1999 at a party in Seville, Spain.

At 18.00 hours on Friday, 30 March 2001, Her Majesty the Queen announced the engagement of His Royal Highness Prince Willem-Alexander, Prince of Orange, Prince of the Netherlands, Prince of Orange-Nassau, Jonkheer Van Amsberg, and Ms Máxima Zorreguieta.

The announcement was broadcast live on television in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Claus of the Netherlands and the Engaged Couple.
